When resizing a GIF or PNG that includes transparency, the transparency isn't preserved in the resulting image

Is this a problem with Image_Transform (in which case reporting to the PEAR bug tracker is correct) or a problem with the PHP GD library? I'm not a GD user, so I need some help in finding the source of the problem :-)
