I just found this, and it refreshed my faith in the QuickForm solution - with the direction web design seems to be going, this (plus a sample CSS that makes it visually identical to the old default table renderer) would be a great default renderer for the QuickForm package.

Understood that it can't be changed for 3.2.x - I think this is almost more of a "marketing" feature request, because it only speaks to people's initial impression of the package (It took a LONG time of me being trapped in the default/table renderer before I discovered the xhtml/css solution. But then again, perhaps others discover that feature faster.)

I'll log against QF2.
